What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is often translated as "the wisdom (or knowledge) of life." Originating in Indiamore than 5,000 years ago, it's a holistic system of health that teaches us how to live inharmony with nature—and with ourselves.

At its heart, Ayurveda recognizes a simple truth:

Life is always changing.

The seasons change.

Our children change.

Our bodies change.

Our roles and responsibilities change.

Rather than expecting us to keep living the same way through every stage of life, Ayurveda invites us to notice these changes and respond with care.

For parents raising tweens and teens, this perspective can be especially meaningful. While your child is moving through one of the biggest transitions of their life, you may be navigating a season of change yourself. Ayurveda offers practical ways to support your body, mind, and nervous system so you can move through that season with greater steadiness, energy, and well-being.

A Personalized Approach to Well-Being

One of Ayurveda's foundational principles is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health.

Each of us has a unique constitution, known as our dosha (mind-body type), which is made up of the five elements found throughout nature: space, air, fire, water, and earth.

The three doshas are:

  • Vata (space & air) – movement, communication, creativity, and the nervous system

  • Pitta (fire & water) – digestion, metabolism, focus, and transformation

  • Kapha (water & earth) – structure, stability, nourishment, and resilience

Everyone has all three doshas in different proportions, creating a unique blueprint for health. Understanding your constitution—and how it may be out of balance—helps us choose the foods, daily rhythms, and lifestyle practices that best support you.
